It’s been a while since I played with mitered boxes, and I had never made one with splined miters before, so I thought a small one made from a chunk of walnut would be an appropriate project to practice on.
The sides and bottom were cut from a single piece of reclaimed black walnut. I arranged the sides so the wood grain would look continuous all the way around. The small spline details were cut from poplar for contrast.
I poked around the dark recesses of my workshop for a long while before stumbling across this piece of smoky looking walnut I used for the removable lid. The edges and corners were rounded over extensively to soften its appearance, for a pillow-like effect.
Once complete, the box was sealed with a clear epoxy finish. It’ll hold about 30 bags of tea, or whatever you think it ought to hold.
