"…quotation came from the final two lines of one of the many poems written about sports by this country’s first great sportswriter, Grantland Rice. “For when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name, He writes–not that you won or lost–but how you played the Game.”" www.reddit.com/r/chiliadmystery/comments/26zty3/who_is_th…
My paternal grandfather, Joseph Percy Garland, born Sept. 28, 1878 died Dec. 28, 1953 in El Paso (TX), was employed by AT&T (the phone company) for many years. He taught me to have meaningful conversations with the cats who lived under the house and also to play a dice game called craps.
He was an excellent cook, specializing in tomatoes baked with what I now realize was a heavy hand with black pepper. My famous devil’s food cake recipe was from one of his cookbooks.
A heavy smoker, when he developed lung cancer, he shot himself in the head. Although there was just a wall between where he did that and my bedroom, I happily did not hear the gunshot. My daddy was crazy about him, and I liked him too.
I think it was his father (maybe grandfather) that owned the opera house in Hueco, Texas. His wife, my grandmother Lulu, divorced him when my dad was about 16 and married a friend of theirs whose surname was Hackler. She died before I was born.
He showed no sign of being religious or especially philosophical when I knew him; however, he died when I was about seven, so I really don’t know. But I do know this sign was meaningful to him as he always kept it displayed. The paint on it may be because he kept it in the room where he did projects such as woodworking.
"…the first atomic bomb was exploded on 16 July 1945. It is roughly 20 miles south of Bingham, New Mexico…My grandfather Joseph Percy Garland was up at 5:30 a.m. and saw the entire sky light up even though the blast was 150 miles to the north of El Paso." hpgarland.blogspot.com/2007/04/trinity-site.html
