Neamt Fortress is a medieval fortress in Moldova, located on the northwestern edge of the city of Târgu Neamț. It is located on the Timus rock on the Pleșului peaks (also called the Fortress Hill), at an altitude of 480 m and at a height of 80 m above the water level of Neamț. From here, it guarded the valley of Moldova and Siret, as well as the road that crossed the mountain in Transylvania.
Neamt Fortress was part of the system of fortifications built in Moldova at the end of the 14th century, when the Ottoman danger appeared. The system of medieval fortifications included fortified settlements (royal courts, monasteries with high walls, as well as forts of strategic importance) for defense purposes, reinforced with stone walls, ground waves or with deep ditches.
The fortress was built at the end of the 14th century by Petru I and was fortified in the 15th century by Ștefan cel Mare.
In the 16th century, at the request of the Turks who had placed him on the throne during his second reign, the ruler Alexandru Lăpuşneanu (1552-1561, 1564-1568) was forced to demolish all the cities so that the country would not be able to defend himself. The ruler set fire to the fortress, but with its thick walls, the Neamt Fortress did not suffer any major damage, it only burned the woodwork and collapsed the ceilings supported by thick oak beams.
In the 17th century the fortress was repaired by the ruler Vasile Lupu (1634-1653).
In the 18th century, at the end of the Austro-Turkish war of 1716-1718 the Ottomans ordered the ruler Mihai Racoviţă to destroy the fortress of Neamt. Although very partially destroyed, the fortress of Neamţ subsequently lost its political and military importance and the process of degradation has steadily increased.
And it was in the 19th century that the first measures of protection and restauration of the fortress were taken by the ruler Mihail Sturdza (1834-1849).
