Macro Mondays – Inspired by a Song
"The Hole" by Jake Thackray
Thackray introduces this song as being about "the human condition, which I am in and out of. Most of the time."
"After work on Friday I was waiting for a bus.
Me mouth was dropping open and my gaze was vacuous.
And in the British worker’s classic pose I was leaning on a door
When half way down the wormy woodwork quite by chance I saw a little hole.
Well I know it sounds ridiculous, I know it’s awfully odd,
But I suddenly felt like giving that little hole a furtive prod.
And so I poked my finger in and then I waggled it about.
But once I’d got the bleeder in, I couldn’t get the bleeder out of the hole.

A wooden salt bowl. The lid is fixed to the bottom and slides over with perfect precision snugly closing the salt inside. On the left a wooden spoon for the salt. Realy nice wood-work.

This home, located on the corner of North Main Street and Clinton Street, is a fine example of the Queen Anne style of architecture. It was built in 1881 for the William Kellogg family, and was designed by Archimedes Russell, a well-known architect from Syracuse. His fondness for the sunflower symbol, typical of the 1880′s, is prominently featured on the gables of the house, the side entry door, the main staircase, and even the weathervane. Many original features still exist, including beautiful stained glass windows, parquet floors, fantastic woodwork, five working fireplaces, and two indoor “inhouses” (as opposed to “outhouses”)
Victorian Eastlake or Stick Style 1860-1890 Stick Style is not so much as an architectural style as a decorative one. Stick style houses are tall with steep roofs and broad eaves supported by brackets. Their main characteristic is the use of the wall surface as a decorative element, with horizontal, vertical, and diagonal linear stylistic facings

I have a pair of these tiny treasures. There is this late winter/early spring scene and one of a red roofed chalet in the mountains in the summer. I inherited them from a distant relative and I love them. They’re made completely of wood and the house, church and snow bank are carved separately and glued to the painted plywood. (That’s why it throws such a shadow.).
I’m thinking that this folk art was made in the 1940’s. I’ve seen a picture of my relatives shortly after their wedding and this was hanging on the wall. I often wonder if her brother-in-law made them since he was quite a woodworker but I don’t think I’ll ever know for sure.

My round 17 partner Joanne Giguère offered this challenge…..
But i realise that there’s not much objects or still life in your stream. So i’ll push you this way if you don’t mind. Try to take an object or some objects that means something to you, that have a history that you can share and play around with the lighthing and the set up.
OK here goes Joanne 🙂 These two shots are definitely still life especially the 6′ grand piano. I had to play with the lighting a bunch and realize that I need to invest in some light boxes or umbrellas soon. The Taylor guitar moves a bit more. Besides my wife and family two things (other than photography) have been the most inspirational in my life and those are music and sports. It was not but 5 years ago when my tennis doubles partner and I were ranked #1 in US in our age and division when I had to have my elbow rebuilt thus ending a long and successful career that paid for college along the way. Golf has taken its place and I try to get 2-3 rounds in a week. I have posted sports pictures in the past so I decided to go the music route and combined it with Macro Mondays.
I always wanted to be a professional musician but learned early on it would not pay the bills 🙂 I play many instruments and have also built many (oh yeah – woodworking is another hobby). Piano was my first instrument and is still the one I always fall back on even today. My main instrument through school was the violin with the guitar not far behind. I have played in many orchestras and bands with a number of various instruments so music has been very good to me!
I think that is enough of a story for now and thank you for your challenge and a chance to revisit some great times!!

A chisel is a tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge (such that wood chisels have lent part of their name to a particular grind) of blade on its end, for carving or cutting a hard material such as wood, stone, or metal by hand, struck with a mallet, or mechanical power. The handle and blade of some types of chisel are made of metal or of wood with a sharp edge in it.
Chisel use involves forcing the blade into some material to cut it. The driving force may be applied by pushing by hand, or by using a mallet or hammer. In industrial use, a hydraulic ram or falling weight (‘trip hammer’) drives a chisel into the material.
A gouge, one type of chisel, serves – particularly in woodworking, woodturning and sculpture – to carve small pieces from the material. Gouges most frequently produce concave surfaces. A gouge typically has a ‘U’-shaped cross-section.
