Another grey day in Orkney took us to the South Mainland and the Italian Chapel. This is not prob the best composition as I think one more to the left would have been better… However would you believe my camera battery gave up and I’d forgot to pack the spare! So my first and only composition is all I brought home! LOL I stood there for AGES waiting on a people free shot… It’s amazing the tourist numbers this place attracts.
The Italian Chapel is a fantastic little Catholic Church located on Lamb Holm in the Orkney Islands. It was built during WWII by Italian POWs who where housed on the Island whilst they where put to work building the Churchill Barriers to the East of Scapa Flow.
It was built out of limited materials gifted to the POWs by the construction firm Balfour Beatty (who I work for) who they where assisting to build the barriers. The walls and details which look like tiles and woodwork in the pic are all hand painted on plasterboard. It really is a wonderful little place which feels much more honest and religious that the huge Cathedrals and Basilicas of Religions I have visited around the world.
