The Latest Ad Hoc Mobile Personal Tech Networking Device Patent by Apple

Every day the smart phone market has something new to say, new to report, or more information to retort. For instance, now Apple is upping the ante on their control over the smart phones they sell, and has decided to apply for a few new patents. Yes, this is all typical in Apple Style, and yet, one of those patents is very telling to us at our Internet style Think Tank, as we are constantly remunerating about such things.

Great article on August 20, 2010 in ARS Technica entitled; “Apple May Be Looking to Lock Out Unauthorized iOS Users,” by Chris Foresman who reported that Apple filed a patent titled; “Systems and Methods for Identifying Users of an Electronic Device,” such as heartbeat analysis, photo, voice print, and suspicious behavior uncommon to the known user.

So, I guess a thief who has stolen the phone would then be giving away his/her picture, voice print, keystrokes, and Global Position (location). The patent appears to also be able to turn off phone, erase hard-drive, and download all information to the “cloud” which is to protect the user. Yes, very nice, but with this technology, the authorities could also shut-it-down if the individual was suspected of being a bad guy, rioter, terrorist, etc. too.

Now then some folks at Slash-Dot ask, well would this also allow Apple to shut off those who “jail-break” from Apple’s proprietary software? A great question posed by SoulSkill (screen name). A very good question, and inquiring minds, like mine want to know. But I also suspect that by having this feature, it means that the US Army would be interested in this for our “Blue Force” tracking in the Net Centric or rather Ad Hoc networked battlespace too. See that point.

If an enemy gets a hold of one of their mobile devices, boom! – it is shut off and we have a picture of the enemy’s camp, and what questions are asked, and the position of the soldier or device? Wow, now that is what I call using privileged information during interrogation. It also helps Apple sell its devices to the US Government over competitors like Motorola, Nokia, HTC, Google, and Blackberry too.

Unfortunately, this will totally fuel new conspiracy theories and NSA fringe seekers living in old cold war missile silos waiting for the apocalypse or Terminator’s SkyNet to take over? Is this more big brother, or just upping the stakes in the world of personal tech, and government, military security for communication devices? You decide, I’ve already decided for myself.

The Best iPhone Ever? We Talk iPhone 6S Post Release

The Apple iPhone 6S & 6S Plus are both the latest releases from Apple to try and set a new benchmark in the market. Apple products are world renowned for build quality and consistency. These new handsets make other manufactures look on with envy.

With a new rose gold aluminium finish to ensure everyone around you knows your rocking the “S” series, they still make me want to hold them for a millisecond longer. Waking up in the morning to that harsh but reassuring feel of stone cold aluminium still makes me smile inside. I love quality feeling products. From Apple, to Android and back to Apple – I can’t say that about any other devices I have owned.

Some sources are recommending the larger 6S Plus as the “preferred choice” for anyone looking to get hold of one of these beasts, due to the larger screen and larger battery. I would rather say: go with what fits your needs. I have children, so the 6S Plus is ideal for keeping the kids quiet on long journeys, or boring trips to the supermarket. Multimedia consumption on the iPhone 6S (as was with the standard 6) is a really pleasurable experience.

The biggest and most noticeable change to come to the iPhone 6S & 6S Plus is the new screen technology called 3D touch. It lets you access quick options and common tasks by holding down on an App icon with a little pressure. To be honest, it’s a great addition. During my Android days, it was great to have an options button for apps to complete quick and common app functions. By holding down on an app, you are presented with a quick actions menu, which differs from app to app. Apple should have added this function years ago in my opinion. But better late than never and it works beautifully.

Using the new 3D Touch technology, you are now also able to use the keyboard as a virtual mouse. Well kind of. Before, if you made a typing boo-boo, you would hold your finger down on the text input field until the bubble appeared and drag the cursor to the desired place on the page where you want to make the edit. Say goodbye to that bubble.

Editing is now instigated by moving your finger on the keyboard (with a little downward pressure) and whala – your cursor appears and you can start moving it to your desired position on the screen.

The camera has also been improved. I have always rated the camera’s in the iPhones regardless of megapixel hype. The new 12MP rear camera is magnificent! It’s also capable of shooting 4K video. But be warned, 4K recording with require lots of internal memory and storage. The files get pretty big, pretty fast!

OK, so it’s not all graces and applause from me. Those horrid antenna lines that stand out on the back of the phone are still prominent, no matter which direction you look at them and the slippy back has almost cost me my handset a few times already. That pretty much demands that a case is used, but it’s a shame to cover up such a great piece of technology.

That being said, the 6S and 6S Plus are both made from stronger aluminium than the standard 6, which is noticeable when you pick up the new handsets. They are also marginally thicker than the 6. Not by much, but it’s noticeable.

I can’t help but think that the “S” series is a testing unit – for bigger and better things to come. Take 3D touch for example – 90+ sensors under the screen measuring the pressure of your every touch – but only works with Apple’s apps. The 4K video recording – I mean, it’s a great to have, but how many of us have 4K ready multimedia systems at home. I don’t for sure. It’s still not as main stream as people hoped and it won’t be until the cost of 4K products comes down. Samsung has been including 4K recording in some of its handsets since back in 2013. And I don’t know if many people actually take full advantage of it. It’s really a pro feature, great to have but better left disabled for the time being.

I could go on and on about the new Apple handsets but that’s not going to happen. Why? Because you can find that stuff all over the internet. What I want to do is cover the question of – Is it the best phone ever made and is it worth your upgrade?

Saying that something is the best ever instantly deflates other manufacturers efforts and I believe that it’s not fair to do that.

Is it the best iPhone ever? In my opinion, No. The reason I say that is because the features that the iPhone 6 offers are, well, more useful today. Everything that you need to do on a day to day basis is easily achieved by the 6, and in my opinion, the 6 is the best iPhone for the normal consumer. I am by no means saying that the 6S is not a worthy contender for your hard earned cash, but how many of those bells and whistle’s can be used everyday? Sure, you will look great putting down an iPhone 6S or 6S Plus on the table at your local watering hole, but have no room on your phone for anything else, once you have taken a few 4K “showing off” videos.

If you currently rock an iPhone 5 or 5S, the 6S will blow you away. It’s a fantastic piece of hardware and you’ll be pleased with it.

My 6 is still my everyday driver. The 6S is going back on Monday. Nice, but not worth it at the moment I’m afraid.

What to Consider When You Switch From Android to iPhone

Although they may be tempted, many users are afraid to take the radical step of changing their cell phone and operating system… what about the photos, the music collection, and the contacts? The process of moving from iOS to Android or vice versa and migrating all the data can be cumbersome, but not impossible. So there is no reason to stay “stuck” in the network of Apple products or Google: here we tell you how to make the jump without despair in the attempt. In this installment, we cover the steps to move from the Android system to the iOS.

Use a Migration App

If you do not want to do the process of transferring your data step by step, you can use the services of a migration app, such as the free Copy My Data or AT&T Mobile Transfer, although the available applications vary from one country to another. This type of application transfers your contacts, calendars, photos, and videos through a Wi-Fi connection, so you do not need to connect your phone to a computer.

Anyway, before starting next points, you need to have a look at what successful entrepreneur FERAS ANTOON said about. You just have to download the app on both phones; Android and iPhone and follow the instructions.

How to Transfer Your Contacts and other Documents

During the configuration process, when you add the email accounts you want to your new iPhone or iPad, you can also choose to include the data associated with each email account, be it contacts, calendars or notes.

On the other hand, if you store your contacts and calendars in an account of a social network such as Facebook, Twitter or Weibo, you can use the apps of those same networks to transfer them to your new iPhone.

To do this you must log in from your cell phone in the particular app you want and activate in the calendar and contacts settings. According to data from July 2015, Apple sold 47.5 million of the iPhone in the quarter that ended in June, 35% more than last year. But iPad demand continued to decline, 18% less than the previous year. Also, if you create an account in iCloud, using your Apple ID, you can also import the contacts that you have recorded in the vcard file and keep them stored in the cloud.

To do this from your computer go to http://www.icloud.com, enter with your Apple account and click on “Contacts”. Click on the icon on the bottom left that looks like a small wheel and mark “Import vCard” in the menu.

When you turn on your new iPhone, the setup wizard will help you activate iCloud on your cell phone. If you skipped that step in the configuration process you can activate it manually by going to Settings or Settings> iCloud. With iCloud, you can also access from your iPhone any Word, Excel or PowerPoint document that you have saved in the cloud.

How to Transfer Your Photos

In order not to lose the photos and videos of your Android phone you will have to transfer them to your new iPhone or iPad using an app or a computer with iTunes. You will find various data transfer apps in the Apple App Store and in the Google Play store depending on your country.

In addition to the general data migration applications mentioned earlier, there are also other specific ones for photos, such as PhotoSync. Alternatively, you can transfer your images to iTunes using a Mac or PC computer. For this, you will have to first pass your images from your Android phone to your computer and then synchronize them with iTunes.

Transfer an App to a New iPhone or iPad

With the recent removal of a popular game app from the App Store, many people are wondering how to transfer an app that is no longer available in the App Store from an old device to a new device.

Some folks have resorted to buying used iPhones and iPads on the Internet that contain the app they want. This is a bit extreme considering, once you own an app, it can be transferred to your other devices, even if it is no longer available on the App Store.

If an app is still available on the App Store, you can download it directly on your new device. Once you purchase an app, there should be no additional fee to re-download the app, assuming you are using the same Apple ID in which the app was originally purchased. However, if the app was removed from the App Store, there are other options available to transfer an app.

Transfer an App Using iTunes

Start by connecting your old iOS device to your computer using the USB cable that came with your device. Make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed on your computer and open iTunes. Select your device in iTunes to display the Summary screen for the device.

Click the Back Up Now button to create a backup of the device on the computer. This copies data from the iOS device, including the apps, to the computer. Once the backup is complete, you can disconnect your old device from the computer.

Setting Up a Brand New Device

If you are setting up a brand new device and want it to contain all the data from your old device, power on the device, connect it to your computer, and begin the setup process by following the on-screen instructions. When prompted, select Restore from iTunes Backup. Make sure to select the backup you just created from the list. The data from this backup will be copied to your new device.

Transfer an App to an Existing Device

If an iPhone or iPad has already been setup, you may not want to install a complete backup of your old device. This would erase all the data currently on the device and replace it with data from the backup. This probably isn’t desirable if you just want to transfer an app from the old device.

Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes. Select the device to display the Summary screen for the device. Select the Apps tab near the top of the window to display all the apps on the computer. Apps that were backed up from your old device should appear in the list. Select the app you want to transfer to the device and click Install.

iCloud Backups

If you typically backup your device to iCloud instead of using iTunes on your computer, it is important to understand the apps are not included in the iCloud backup. The iCloud backup will contain data used by apps such as documents or user settings, but the apps typically reside in the App Store and are therefore not saved in iCloud. When you restore a device from iCloud, apps are automatically downloaded from the App Store. If the app has been removed from the App Store, it will not be installed on your device during the restore.

Face ID In iPhone X: What Do iOS App Developers Need To Know?

Apple announced a new and expensive edition of its popular smartphone – iPhone X – in September. The company subsequently made iPhone X available in more than 55 countries and territories. In addition to featuring an edge-to-edge OLED display, iPhone X also comes with a number of out-of-box features to challenge the dominance of Android platform.

At the same time, the special iPhone model also comes with an exclusive facial recognition system – Face ID. Face ID enables users to use their face just like conventional passwords. The facial scanning system enables a user to unlock his iPhone X simply by looking towards the smartphone with his eyes open. He can even use Face ID to keep the data stored on his iPhone X secure and make mobile payments.

However, Face ID in iPhone X takes advantage of another robust hardware feature included in the smartphone – TrueDepth camera. Many analysts believe that Apple will soon make the innovative facial scanning system available to other iPhone and iPad models. Hence, the iOS developers must understand important aspects of Face ID in iPhone X to meet the emerging mobile app development trend.

Important Aspects of Face ID in iPhone X each iOS App Developer Must Know

Replaces Touch ID on iPhone X

Touch ID was an integral part of several iPhone models. The authentication system enables users to unlock their smartphones simply by placing their fingers on the sensor. A user can even use Touch ID to perform various financial transactions and mobile payment. IPhone X is designed with Face ID instead of Touch ID. Unlike Touch ID, Face ID does not require users to touch their smartphones. A user can take advantage of Face ID to unlock his device simply by glancing at the screen. At the same time, the iOS app developers can take advantage of the new facial recognition system simply by replacing the Touch ID code with Face ID code.

Does not make Passcodes Obsolete

Despite replacing Touch ID on iPhone X, Face ID is yet to replace passcodes fully. Apple recommends iPhone X users to use passcodes while restarting the device, the device has remained unlocked for more than 48 hours, and the user has attempted wrong face match five times. Also, a user has to use passcode to make his iPhone X accessible to friends and family members.

Authenticates through TrueDepth Camera

Face ID authenticates users through another new feature provided by iPhone X – TrueDepth camera system. The advanced camera system captures all features of a user’s face through depth mapping. Also, TrueDepth creates a unique facial map by capturing over 30000 invisible dots projected onto a user’s face. Each time a user unlocks his iPhone X, TrueDepth Camera reads the dot patterns through an infrared camera and captures an infrared image. It subsequently sends the infrared image to Secure Enclave in the A11 Bionic chip. Once authenticity of the infrared image is confirmed the iPhone gets unlocked.

Uses Machine Learning

A user’s appearance may differ from time to time. Face ID uses machine learning algorithms to recognize the changes in a user’s appearance. Hence, a user can unlock his iPhone X regardless of his current appearance. He can take advantage of Face ID in iPhone X to unlock and authenticate despite wearing a hat, putting on glasses, and growing a beard. TrueDepth Camera further uses a flood illuminator to identify a user’s face through invisible infrared light when there is inadequate light.

Prevents Unauthorized Device Access

Despite identifying different appearances of the same user, Face ID in iPhone X still does not allow any other persons who unlock the smartphone. While unlocking the iPhone X, a user has to keep his eyes open. If the user’s eyes are closed, the iPhone X will remain unlocked. The feature makes it difficult for unauthorized users to unlock the mobile device when the original user is sleeping or absent. However, Face ID in iPhone X lacks the capability to identify identical twins. A user has to use a passcode additionally to prevent his iPhone X inaccessible to the twin.

No Option to Register Multiple Users

Apple further enhances the security of iPhone X by allowing each user to register a single face. No user has option to register multiple faces. Hence, only one user can unlock and authenticate through the Face ID. However, a user can still make his iPhone X accessible to multiple users by sharing his passcode. Multiple users can access the same iPhone X by performing authentication through passcode instead of Face ID.

Performs Multiple Tasks

In addition to keeping the iPhone X secure, Face ID also improves user experience by performing some basic tasks. The attention-aware nature of the facial recognition system further enables users to perform basic tasks simply by looking towards the iPhone X. For instance, a user can take advantage of Face ID to check messages and notifications, reduce volume of alarm or ringtone, and keep the screen lit while reading.

Facilitates Mobile Payment

Along with enhancing security of iPhone X, Face ID will also facilitate mobile payment. It will work seamlessly with Apple Pay. Also, a user can take advantage of Face ID in iPhone X while shopping at the brick-and-mortar stores and restaurants that support Touch ID payment. Also, the apps that support Touch ID will allow users to take advantage of Face ID. The developers can make their existing iOS apps support Face ID by replacing the Touch ID code with Face ID code. However, many banks and financial institutions are yet to support Face ID fully.

Security and Privacy Issues

Apple implements several security mechanisms to keep facial scan private and secure. After scanning a user’s face, the TrueDepth Camera system stored the information directly in the A11 Bionic chip. Apple further does not transfer the information to its server or cloud. Hence, the facial scanning information remains only on the iPhone X. Apple further uses the facial recognition system as a robust security tool to keep user data inaccessible and prevent unauthorized access. A hacker in Vietnam recently claimed to break Face ID by creating a complex face mask. But several security experts believe that Apple has to make several changes to Face ID in iPhone X to make it an effective security measure.

On the whole, Face ID in iPhone X transforms iOS app development by replacing Touch ID. But the iOS app developers must remember that the facial recognition system is currently used only by a single model of iPhone. Apple will make Face ID available on upcoming versions of iPhone and iPad gradually. Hence, the developers must explore ways to make their existing iOS apps support Face ID. Also, they must adopt the emerging trends in iOS app development to make their mobile app relevant and popular over a longer period of time.

Apple Watch 3: Time For a New Calling

It’s time for some wrist talking. Apple has rolled out its new line of Series 3 watches complete with cellular capability.

The new smartwatches are now on sale, just in the nick of time for holiday shopping.

Apple Watch fans will find the Series 3 is the full replacement for the Apple Watch 2. It features many upgrades including the ability to make calls from your wrist.

The watch enables cell calling on all major carriers in the U.S. The device supports both data and voice and uses the same number as your iPhone.

Calls do come at a price, it will add about $10 per month to your existing wireless fee, but imagine the fun and options of conversing like comic detective Dick Tracy.

Apple’s new W2 wireless chip helps make the calls work. It switches between Bluetooth, Wi-Fi networks and the watch itself always searching for your iPhone first.

Calls can be dialed directly with the keypad on the watch, or by tapping an existing contact. Actual message writing is limited to scribbling letters, tapping emoji, or dictation.

You can also have a voice conversation with Siri. She is no longer limited to just on-screen text responses. Engaging Siri without an iPhone nearby though can be troublesome.

While the watch is designed to free you up from your phone it does require your iPhone to help with setup and app installation. Calling will not work with Android phones.

Most use the Apple Watch as a fitness tracker. New with the Series 3 is an on-watch extra sensor barometric altimeter with GPS. The built-in GPS records the distance, speed and route of your outdoor workouts.

The altimeter tracks elevation during your hilliest rides and highest climbs. It is also “ocean proof” and safe at 50 meters.

Heart rate monitoring has been improved. More graphs are listed for all-day averages in resting heart rate and walking heart rate. Other graphs and averages for workouts are listed as well much like Samsung’s Gear watches fitness offerings.

Workouts are easier to start and stop, or switch on the fly. Runs can be auto-paused. Music controls show up in workouts with a quick swipe, and music playlists can be set to go automatically.

Those who wish to listen to music to accompany their workout will find improved synchronization with the WatchOS 4 operating system. Playlists can be added when the watch is charging. Most songs can be downloaded from your iTunes library.

Like most newer Apple products wireless headphones are required to enjoy the audio. AirPods are a good pairing for the watch.

While the Apple Series 3 has added capabilities it is not a full replacement for the iPhone. Responding to emails and messages is not easy and there is no camera. Your phone is still needed to set everything up and for adding apps and other information.

Battery life can be an issue. Due to limitations phone calls can be severely curtailed as can GPS-aided workouts. Costs for wireless service and Apple music add to the expense.

Users of Apple Watch 2 will find little difference in appearance between the old and new devices. The 3 features a red dot on the crown the 2 does not. Size is about the same. You can use your older bands associated with the previous models.

The cellular version of the Series 3 will run around $400. A stainless steel model will run near $600 and then there are the more luxurious Hermes and ceramic edition models priced at over $1,200.

Apple keeps improving its smartwatch offerings. While not revolutionary the Series 3 is first to offer cell capability with improved fitness applications. The tech giant is hoping consumers will find that now is the right time to purchase one.

What Is iCloud and How Does It Help Me?

Apple’s iCloud service has been around for several years, but many iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users don’t really understand it. Taking a few minutes to setup the service on your mobile devices and your computer could save you a significant amount of time and effort in the future.

What is iCloud?

It is simply a service that keeps information on all your devices in sync. In other words, you can share information between an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and a computer. The information on each device is automatically updated to make sure the most current information is available on all devices. The service is free, operates wirelessly, and runs in the background, with no special action required by the user.

For example, you may be out with friends and take some photos with your iPhone. Those photos are automatically available on all your other devices. There is no need to manually transfer photos from your iPhone to your computer. The photos are automatically available on your computer.

In addition to syncing photos across multiple devices, it also syncs other information such as: iTunes purchases, Contacts, Calendars, Notes, documents, Reminders, and Safari bookmarks. It provides the capability to backup your device or locate a lost device.

The syncing service works by storing your information securely on a remote server. This online storage capability is also known as “cloud” storage. By securely storing your information online, you can access this information from any device, at any time.

Create an Account

To get started, you must first create a free account. Typically, your account can be the same as your Apple ID. If this sounds a little confusing, your Apple ID is the email address you used when signing up for iTunes. You use the Apple ID and password to download apps or music. To keep things simple, you can also use the same Apple ID when creating an iCloud account. However, if you have more than one person sharing the Apple ID, you may want to create a separate account.

Setup on an iOS Device

As part of the setup process for a new device, you were asked to enter an Apple ID and setup iCloud. You may have an active account and not realize it. Even if you elected not to enable the service as part of your initial device setup, you can enable it at any time by opening the Settings app on your iOS device and selecting iCloud. If the service is not enabled, you will be asked to enter your Apple ID and password. Once logged in, you will see options to enable syncing of various types of information. Set the slider control to ON for each item you want to sync between devices.

Setup on a Computer

On a Mac, select iCloud in the System Preferences and sign in with your Apple ID and password. If you have a PC, you will need to download a control panel item from Apple’s website http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1455. Once it is installed on your PC, open the icon in the Control Panel, and sign in with your Apple ID and password.

Trying to manually keep information up to date on several mobile devices and a computer can be a challenging task. With iCloud, keeping information synced across all your devices has never been easier.
