How often should hair masks be used? It all depends on hair condition – if hair need some treatment, better to use it 2-3 times a week. If hair is healthy it is enough to use hair mask once a week to make hair silky and smooth. It is reasonable to change a hair mask you use, for example alternate nutrition masks with moisturizing masks. Homemade hair masks are effective and usually don’t cause allergies.
Using homemade masks
You should apply fresh made mask just after you have prepared it. You can store some of homemade masks in refrigerator for 1-2 days, but for most of them it is always better to prepare one portion of mask. Choose hair masks according to your hair and scalp type. Wrong mask can make your hair look worse. Before applying warm up the mask to a comfortable temperature using water bath or just put bowl with mask in hot water for some time – warm up mask will work better. If you apply mask on clean hair then do light massage to your scalp, it will increase blood flow in scalp and will help absorption and distribution of nutrients (especially good for dry hair and scalp). If you apply mask not to freshly washed hair it is not recommended to do massage – do not rub dust and styling products in to skin. Keep mask on your hair exactly specified time and wash hair with plenty of water afterward. If you applied mask on clean hair – don’t use shampoo when washing it off, just water will be enough.
One of the most popular ingredients in homemade masks is clay. Hair masks based on clay absorb dirt, clean scalp and hair, stimulate microcirculatory and provide antiseptic effect. Clay hair mask adds more body to hair.
White clay helps from falling out, green – from seborrhea, yellow – from dandruff, red clay will calm down irritated scalp, blue will clean and protect hair, fill it with oxygen. Clay is usually sold in pharmacies.
