July is Twitter Month for us so for those already using Twitter for their business stay tuned for more ‘how tos’ and tips on using Twitter for business!

For those of you who haven’t braved the Twitter social media waters quite yet, this article will provide compelling reasons why you should use Twitter for business and then dive into how to set up your profile and how to get started building your following on Twitter.

Why Use Twitter For Your Business?

Twitter is a major player in online social media. In January of this year Google purchased Twitter Fabric (A Twitter development arm for apps) for an undisclosed sum for good reason. With 328 million + active Twitter accounts it’s a big audience to exist within.

Your ability to reach your target audience is amplified by having Twitter as it allows your users to see the latest news on your business in real time and provides a window into your company by way of what you share and promote.

Almost 25% of verified Twitter users count themselves as journalists and often news hits Twitter before the other platforms have a chance to draft a report.

Whether you’re local or national or even international following journalists and making connections is a great way to have your own content shared with a large audience with the intention of course that some turn into paying customers.

It’s no surprise the current estimate is 93% of businesses use Twitter with over half using it daily.

Another big plus is how Twitter (and social media in general) has replaced traditional PR. Companies who use Twitter report a 20% improvement in customer relations!

How to Set Up Your Twitter Account

Let’s break down just how easy it is to set up a Twitter account. Then we’ll review how to use it.

Step one in setting up Twitter:

a. In order to access this in your new account you’ll need to click on the top right next to where you see the word Tweet.

b. This will open a menu.

c. Select the top part where you see the username you entered when signing up.

d. This will take you to your Twitter profile page.

e. Now select Edit Profile as indicated on the page.

f. Now you can enter your bio (limited to 160 alpha numeric characters)

*When drafting your bio start with what your business does or share what your followers can expect from you and end with something more personal about you.

Example 1: A certified fitness coach who’s passion is health, wellness & eating Vegan sharing tips and recipes to help you on your health journey. Wife & Mom who loves the outdoors

Example 2: (This is mine): I share tips on Digital Marketing, Websites, Branding & Social Media. An experienced & passionate Web Developer, eBusiness Consultant, Wife, Mother & Chocoholic

g. Update your professional profile photo (image size: 400 X 400)

h. Update your header image (image size: 1500 X 500)

i. Enter your location

j. Add in your website address

k. Choose your theme colours – ideally have them match your business brand colours

l. Then click “Save changes”!

Now that you’ve got your profile it’s time to look for followers.

Finding Followers on Twitter

This part is both very easy and very hard. Let me explain!

It’s easy to secure followers from anyone looking to turn you into a customer. It’s much harder in the reverse order.

Some accounts have hundreds of thousands of followers but nearly all are other people looking for clients. It can be easy to get sucked into a sinkhole of marketers so be very wary of any suspicious accounts.

Instead look for people you know. Not just personally but brand personalities you trust. There is a very easy search function at the top right. Just type in a name and start checking.

You can also use Twitter’s Advanced search to narrow down your efforts further.

People with high numbers of ‘Following’ and low numbers of ‘Followers’ indicates they’re not securing good connections with their content so watch out. Even if they are following you, it only means they are watching to see if you follow back and as soon as you do, they will unfollow you. A practice I do not condone at all.

Any accounts with near even numbers of ‘Following’ and ‘Followers’ could simply be people in a niche who follow each other but aren’t reaching anyone outside that sphere. They’re okay to add but make sure that’s not ALL you add.

You can use Twitter’s email tool as well to farm your email for possible connections held within your emails records of people you’ve emailed with in the past.

If you’re still stuck: try writing down a list of brands like yours and add them. Following your competition not only shows you what’s popular in your industry, it also gets your name in front of their followers if you ever feel compelled to reply.

Don’t worry about your Follower count too much and focus on quality over quantity.

Keep Tweeting

Now it’s time to start tweeting! This is your 140 character opportunity to market yourself in your own voice.

Try some tweets out that link to your site’s pages but don’t overdo it. Focus on building out an identity that establishes trust in your followers.

Look for voices in your industry with trust where you can retweet and like their content.

When retweeting look for opportunities to tie their point back to your business. If they share X and you build awareness around X then retweet and add a link back to your relevant page whether it’s a static product page or a blog post. The goal is to reach both them and your users in a way that connects you to the trusted authority.

A great way to increase the viability of your tweeting is to add an image to your tweet. This is really easy and recently Twitter made it even easier with their addition of a GIF function. You can search for funny and/or relevant GIFs right within your Tweet. Just click below the text box where it says GIF.

Make it fun and share content you love. Don’t get into a trap of only using Twitter for self promotion.

Create Your Website – How to Insert Images Into Kompozer

If you want to create a website, you will first need a website building program, and here I am using a free program called Kompozer.

Inserting an image into Kompozer is very easy. Open the webpage you want to put an image in. I am assuming you have used tables to create your website, so put your cursor in the cell you want to insert the image in.

Now click on the image icon in the tool bar. A dialogue box pops up asking you where the image is stored. Select an image and load it. Remember image files are. jpg or .gif files.

When you click OK an alert message will appear, asking you to supply alternate text. This is used by accessibility programmes to describe images on the web – so for example a partially sighted person would hear “image of a clock”. Click on the OK button of the alert and go back to the open dialogue box. Either insert alternate text describing the image or click don’t use alternate text. Then click OK. Your image will appear in your webpage.

This sounds very simple, but beware. Pictures take up lots of compute bytes and can slow down how long it takes a webpage to load. If that happens, people are liable to click away from your website before it loads properly. So, as a rule of thumb your images should be less than 100KB (kilobytes) each. People often think that it is simple matter of clicking and dragging to resize an image, which is true. They then assume that a smaller image takes up less bytes. This is not true!

Here’s how to resize then correctly using another free program called IrfanView. Open the image you want to resize. Click on the image drop down menu, and select resize/resample. In the dialogue box make sure “preserve aspect ratio” is selected, as you don’t want to create a short fat, or thin, tall image! Now set the new size in either pixels, inches or centimetres. As an example, choose 100 pixel width and click OK. Your image will shrink before your very eyes, whilst still retaining its features! Remember to save your image in its new size.

You can find lots of free images on the web, generally the smaller sizes and usually just requiring acknowledgment of either the photographer or the website – try http://www.freedigitalphotos.net. However, you can also buy photos fairly cheaply – try http://www.istockphoto.com. If you are buying the image, make sure you chose the correct contract depending on how you are going to use it.

Remember that when uploading your website, you will need to upload a file containing any images used in the website to your hosting account. Without it, your images will not show on your website..

Smooth Animation in C#

Generating smooth animations with C# across different computer systems can be a challenging task. However there is a simple method to adjust a program behavior to a target number of frames per second.

Animating objects with C# can mean a number of different things.

First would be animating a sequence of picture images like an animated GIF. In this case there is already some existing support in the .Net Framework, but perhaps you want to handle drawing on a frame-by-frame basis.

Another form of animation is with code-generated images. GDI%2B can draw some very complex graphics and animating them smoothly can bring an extra dimension of quality to your .Net applications.

Lastly sometimes programmers want to animate Window Form behavior, such as size, position, text, etc. While these are object properties, we want them to change within a regular interval, no matter what the speed of the computer CPU is.

The first step for writing constant FPS animation in C# is to decide the way to measure CPU cycles. The most commonly used objects to measure time is the Timer object and the DateTime class. While both are easy to use, they lack accuracy. Instead, we are going to make use of the System.Diagonistics.StopWatch class.

The StopWatch class uses the API call QueryPerformanceTimer to keep track of CPU cycles, which is more accurate. Greater accuracy in this case means a more constant animation.

Basically you will want to keep track of three values, two of which will change constantly:

  • Interval = Stopwatch.Frequency / [target FPS (30.0 for example)]
  • currentTicks = Stopwatch.GetTimestamp()
  • lastTicks = same as currentTicks but taken the last time the animation was drawn

The logic behind the C# algorithm is not too complicated. In nutshell, a loop will be constantly running, but you only want the animation to execute/refresh when the last number of CPU cycles and the current number of cycles has at least a gap of the Interval you previously calculated. Then and only then is the animation refreshed.

The result is a constant animation no matter how fast a computer is. Simply adjust the FPS in your own system and that will be the perceived speed across systems.

The reason it works is because animations are not run on a simple while/for loop brainlessly. The loop uses the host computer’s CPU cycles to adjust the interval the animation is refreshed.

Create Lively PowerPoint Presentations With Film and Animated Objects

Movies in a presentation

You can add movies, animated GIF files or Flash files in PowerPoint to create moving pictures. This can be useful if you want to highlight a message to a group of listeners.

Movies

Movies are video files with formats such as AVI or MPEG, and extensions such as avi, mov, mpg and mpeg.

A typical movie can be the company’s new commercial. You can use a movie for educational purposes or to perform a demonstration.

Animated GIF files

An animated GIF file contains motion and has the file extension:gif. Although animated GIF files are not technically films, they contain several images that continuously create an animation effect.

They are often used to highlight a design or a website. GIF files are categorized as film clips by the functionMultimedia clip in Microsoft Office, but are in reality not digital video, and therefore, it is not all movie settings that are available for animated GIF files.

FlashFiles

Flash files are typically used for graphic animations on websites. The advantage of Flash is, that you can use the same image multiple times.

If you have animated graphics created by using Adobe Macromedia Flash and saved it as a Shockwave file with the file extensionswf, you can play the file in a PowerPoint presentation by using the ActiveX objectcalled Shockwave Flash Object and Adobe Macromedia Flash Player.

Add movie from file

You can add movies from a file via Insert | Media clips | Movie | Movie from file… In the dialog box Insert movieyou select the desired movie and then click OK.

When you add a movie on a slide, you must decide how you want to start the playing in the slideshow. You can either choose to play the movie Automatically when the slide appears or When Clicked on the movie itself.

Movie files are always linked to the presentation and not integrated into it.

When you add a linked movie file, a link is created to the current location of the movie file. If you later move the movie file to a different location, PowerPoint cannot find it when the file is played.

TIP: It is a good idea to copy the movies to the same folder as the presentation before you add them.

A link is created to the movie file, and PowerPoint can find the movie file if it is kept in the presentation folder, even if you move or copy the folder to another computer.

You can also make sure that the linked files are in the same folder as the presentation by using the function Package for CD.Read more in the module Import and export.

Movie settings

After you have added a movie in the presentation and the movie is selected, an additional contextual tab Movie Tools is shown. Here you can specify some different options for how the movie is to be played in the presentation.

Hide during slideshow

Only use this option if you have set the movie to play automatically or if you have created another kind of control, for example a trigger that must be clicked to play the movie.

Play movie

When you add a movie, you must specify whether the sound has to play Automatically or When Clicked. If you subsequently want to change this, do this via Play Movie.

Play full screen

This setting means that the movie will be played in full screen. When the movie has played it returns to its original size.

Note that movies should be optimized to be displayed in full screen, otherwise you risk that the quality will be poor and blurred, when made larger.

To play a movie continuously for a single slide

A movie will play once, which is standard for movies in PowerPoint. If you want the movie to be repeated i.e. when the movie finishes playing, it automatically starts again, you can select Looped Until Stopped via Movie Tools. This means that the movie is repeated until you click on the slide or use your keyboard.

Playing a movie over several slides

The option Play across slides means that the film continues even though you navigate back and forth in the presentation.

How to Convert a PowerPoint Presentation Into an Animoto Video

Most people know how to create a PowerPoint presentation, but many don’t realize that the same presentation can easily be converted into an Animoto video, which can be posted on YouTube and used as a source of video marketing. The following information will identify how this is easily accomplished.

When creating a PowerPoint file I would recommend keeping it small and concise (no more than 12 slides) and ensure your font is fairly large so that it is easily read when the video is being watched. Once you have finished your PowerPoint, save it as a.ppt file (nothing special here–just need to have a copy of it on your computer).

What we are going to do now is to save each slide of our PowerPoint as an image–the easy way. Create a folder on your desktop where your images can be saved. Open your PowerPoint file and then go to File>Save As>Other Formats or in the File>Save As dialog box choose GIF Graphics Interchange Format (*.gif).

Note: Make sure you are saving the *.gifs into the folder created earlier.

Click the Save button in PowerPoint and the images will be saved inside the folder that you created–you will now have 10-12 images saved.

If you haven’t already, create a free account on Animoto. Choose to create a video on Animoto, select a free background. A preview of the background will display. Click the link that says, “make a 30-second video for free.” You only need a free video to use, but you can pay if you would like a longer video.

The video interface will display. Click the Upload Images button and point it to the folder where you saved your PowerPoint *.gif images. You may need to adjust the arrangement of your images in Animoto–you can even add slides, if necessary. Select or upload the music for your video.

Click the Finalize button and you will be given the opportunity to enter information about your video.This is where you can enter SEO terms and other variables to help your video to be used for video marketing. Once finished click the Create Video button. Once the video has been created you can choose to export the video to YouTube. Once in YouTube you can add additional information useful for SEO and video marketing.
