Norwegian Wood – A Christmas Tale
Sometimes life doesn’t just surprise you – it takes you by the collar and shakes you to your roots.
Last week I met a complete stranger, a Polish man who was turning wood on a lathe.
In passing, I simply told him in all honesty that I thought his work was really outstanding. He just looked up briefly and nodded back at me.
I wandered off and had a coffee in the workshop. Before I had finished my coffee, he came up to me and gave me this wooden tree he had made on the lathe in just a few minutes.
I started to thank him but his English was not good and he just waved his hand as he went back to his lathe and continued working, totally absorbed in his work.
He was making Christmas trees like this one, spindles, mushrooms and they were all of superb quality.
This man can produce an object of beauty in a few minutes yet he struggles to make ends meet living in this country.
I have made his gift to me, my Christmas card for this year.
The quality of his workmanship and his generosity to a complete stranger make a warming and genuine Christmas tale.
