The Joel White-designed Nutshell Pram is a popular plywood composite pram. They’re an excellent project for our students as they can easily be built during the six month Contemporary Boatbuilding course taught annually from January through mid-June. We often build two at a time to give students more opportunities to learn the basics on these extremely capable small craft.
Prams have transoms on each end – the bow is usually a bit smaller than the stern transom. They’re workhorses, designed to carry a lot of weight back and forth to a boat from the pier. They’re designed to be easy to tow behind a sailboat, or to lift up and store on deck for longer passages. The Nutshell Pram succeeds admirably on all of these accounts.
The Nutshell Pram can be built as a rowing-only boat or equipped with a centerboard and spars so it can be sailed.
