Introduced in the autumn of 1959, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and Bentley S2 appeared externally unchanged from their Silver Cloud and S-Type predecessors, though their performance was considerably enhanced by the new 6.230 cc aluminium-alloy V8 engine. ‘The Bentley S2, with its sister Rolls-Royce models, gives high-speed travel in silence and luxury, while the driver and passengers enjoy the sense of well being that only British craftsmanship can give. The V8 engine, with its flashing acceleration, certainly contributes to the result and is a definite step forward in Rolls-Royce technique,’ enthused Autosport. There were few significant changes to the running gear, though power-assisted steering was now standard and the manual gearbox had been dropped, Rolls-Royce’s own four-speed automatic transmission being the sole offering.

Built in ‘S2’ form from the autumn of 1959, Continental version of the Bentley remained, as ever, exclusively a coachbuilt car. The firms of H J Mulliner, Park Ward, James Young, and Hooper (with a solitary example) all offered bodies on the Continental S2 chassis, which differed from the standard version by virtue of its four-leading-shoe front brakes, shorter radiator and, up to chassis number ‘BC99BY’, higher gearing. Of these four, James Young, and Hooper would soon cease coachbuilding, leaving only Mulliner and Park Ward to carry on a noble tradition.

Chassis number ‘BC119LCZ’ is an example of Park Ward’s influential ‘straight through wing’ body style; it is one of 124 bodied in this fashion by Park Ward, and one of only 61 original left-hand drive cars. This Continental was delivered new to Rolls-Royce Inc in New York, USA where it was sold via J S Inskip Inc to its first owner: Gordon P Kelley of Chicago, Illinois. Copy chassis cards on file record that the car was originally finished in Dawn Blue with light blue hood and matching interior, and left the factory equipped with electric windows and aerial, power operated convertible hood, and Sundym glass. Only one other owner is listed on the chassis cards: an Adrian West of Morrisville, Vermont (from April 1971).

In more recent years the car returned to Europe where it formed part of a small private collection in Holland. Renowned marque specialists, Frank Dale & Stepsons have recently brought this handsome motor car up to showroom condition, with mechanical and electrical preparation as and where necessary, coachwork restoration, chrome restoration, a new hood and headlining, woodwork restoration, and new carpets (bills available). Now presenting and driving beautifully, this superb Bentley Continental comes with a complete small tool kit and is ready for pleasurable summer motoring to the Côte d’Azur and other such delightful destinations.

The international Rally of vintage cars of Barcelona-Sitges, organized by Fomento de Turismo de Sitges uninterruptedly from year 1958, is sponsored at the present time by Audi and allows to see pieces of authentic museum in operation (previous to 1924) and with its passengers dressed in the clothing of the years in which the vehicle was created.

With the passage of the years the event has been rooting and at the moment it is considered as one of most traditional at European level. According to the organizing sources it would be the second more important encounter of vintage cars in Europe behind a classic one like London-Brighton.

Panhard is a French motor vehicle manufacturer, who now specializes in light tactical and military vehicles. It was formed by the acquisition of Panhard by Auverland in 2005. Panhard had been under PSA ownership for 40 years. The combined company now uses the Panhard name.

Panhard was originally Panhard et Levassor and was established as a car manufacturing concern in about 1890 by René Panhard and Emile Levassor. Benz and Daimler, both of Germany, produced pilot models before this time, and Benz was in production by about 1888 with his three-wheeler. Emile Roger of Paris obtained a license to produce this car, and ended up producing more than Benz, due to the ready acceptance of automobiles by the French. Daimler began producing cars in small series circa 1890/91.

The company was founded when René Panhard and Emile Levassor decided to move from making woodworking machines to automobiles. Their first car used a Daimler engine and was offered in 1890.

Daimler’s Stahlradwagen prototypes of 1889 inspired Levassor to manufacture cars. He obtained a licence to produce Daimler’s engine from a friend who already had this licence: a Belgain called Sarazin. Upon Sarazin’s death in 1887, Sarazin’s widow married Levassor, and the deal was cemented. Daimler and Levassor became fast friends, and shared improvements with one another.

These first vehicles set many modern standards, but each was a one-off design. They used a clutch pedal to operate a chain-driven gearbox. The vehicle also featured a front-mounted radiator. A 1895 Panhard is credited with the first modern transmission.

The company’s Systeme Panhard consisted of four wheels, a front-mounted engine with rear wheel drive, and a sliding-gear transmission. This was to become the standard layout for automobiles for most of the next century.

Panhard shared their Daimler engine license with Armand Peugeot, who formed his own company, Peugeot, in 1891. It would not be incorrect to say that Benz, Daimler, Panhard et Levassor, and Peugeot were the four concerns responsible for initiating series production of cars. It was a wonderful example of Franco-German cooperation.

Arthur Krebs succeeded to Levassor as Panhard-Levassor’s General Manager from 1897 to 1916. He turned the Panhard-Levassor Company into one of the largest and profitable manufacturer of automobiles before WWI.

Panhards won numerous races from 1895 to 1903. Panhard developed the Panhard rod, which became used in many other types of automobiles as well.

My girlfriend Zoe bought a 1955 Carpenter (1954 GMC based) school bus from him, and he towed it the 17 miles to our Ranch with his old tractor on public roads:

Panhard & Levassor 7 HP Type A Voiturette – 1902

René Panhard was an engineer whose business, based in Paris, made woodworking tools and built engines under license. With his partner, Émile Levassor, he experimented with horseless carriages using engines licensed from Daimler. In 1891, Panhard & Levassor offered for sale what was arguably the world’s first production car, using a Daimler engine. Above all, the firm was responsible for bequeathing the automobile world the Système Panhard, which embodied the now familiar layout of a front-mounted engine driving the rear axle via a clutch, gearbox and differential. The modern motor car had been born.

Panhard & Levassor swiftly established a reputation for fine engineering, excellent craftsmanship, superior reliability, and outstanding performance, qualities that placed the company at the forefront in early motor sport, notably the great Continental city-to-city races of the time. Little wonder therefore that such notables and sportsmen as the Hon C S Rolls, Chev R de Knyff, Maurice Farman, Léon Girardot, and Fernand Charron were associated so closely with the marque.

This early Panhard & Levassor Type A Voiturette is powered by a 1,654cc twin-cylinder engine. Rated at 7hp, this monobloc unit features automatic inlet valves, side exhaust valves, and trembler coil ignition. The transmission consists of a cone clutch; three speeds and reverse gearbox with right-hand quadrant change; and side-chain final drive. The right-hand drive chassis is of timber and steel flitch-plate construction, with a 1.8m wheelbase and 1.22m track, while suspension is by means of semi-elliptic springs all round. A side lever operates contracting-band brakes on the rear wheels and there is also a transmission brake operated by a foot pedal. Finished in French Blue with black wings, cream coachlines and black leather upholstery, the sporting body is equipped with a cape cart hood and features large, brass, dashboard-mounted sidelights.

According the Panhard ledgers, a copy of which is on file, car number ‘5139’ – a Type A with KA three-speed gearbox – was supplied new on 25th April 1902 to Christy, Médecet et Cie of 1 place d’Helvétie, Lyon, agents for Panhard & Levassor and Renault Frères. No mention is made of the coachwork fitted, but it is believed that the car would have been supplied in rolling chassis form to Clément-Rothschild, whose body (number ‘299’) it still carries today, and purchased by the first owner in this form.

One year later, the Panhard was sold to the second owner, in whose family’s possession it resided for the next 70 years. In 1972 the car was discovered, still in Lyon, by the third owner, the late Guihery Le Rolland, past President of the Teuf-Teuf Club. By now the car was in rather tired order, and Mr Le Rolland commissioned a thorough restoration. Thereafter the Panhard was continually campaigned on rallies and events until the early 21st Century.

In 2007 the car was acquired in Paris by the present owner, who brought it to the UK where a ‘body off’ restoration of all the mechanicals was carried out by Veteran car specialists Henal Engineering Ltd of Hailsham, East Sussex. On file are the bills exceeding £50,000 detailing the complete overhaul of the engine, gearbox, steering, chains and other moving parts. At this time a self-starter and period Zenith carburettor were fitted before the car completed its first London-Brighton Run that year (2007). Benefiting from an early starting time, as a 1902 car, the Panhard subsequently completed the Run a further seven times (up to 2014) – including one of the wettest on record – without a single problem.

At other times of the year, the car was used successfully in annual Creepy Crawly rallies, Ashdown Ambles, and Best of West Kent runs as well as Teuf-Teuf events back in France. It is only the vendor’s advancing years that have compelled him to offer the Panhard for sale now.
On file are documents including a UK V5C Registration Certificate (for the number ‘EA 941’); VCC Certificate of Date No.2535 showing 1902; MoT Certificate up to 2012; photographic record 1902-2007; photocopy extract 1902 Panhard ledger; 2007 restoration bills (see above); and eight London-Brighton Veteran Car Run Completion Certificates.

With its fully documented ownership, this exceptional Panhard & Levassor would make an excellent addition to any collection of important motor cars.

From Classic Shaker to Modern Maker: Meet Jason Burhop of Kastella

The Maker section is perfect for businesses that have manufacturing capabilities, and are looking to expand distribution, and we are lucky to be part of the process of choosing them. We’re talking to two designer/makers from Maker to give you a taste of what you’re going to be seeing in January:

Jason Burhop of Kastella

Montreal-based company Kastella, led by designer/maker Jason Burhop is a made-to-order shop that takes pride in all the work that they do. Their handmade pieces are carefully crafted to meet each client’s specifications using natural materials and eco-friendly finishes. Back in the late 90s, Jason took over a friend’s furniture workshop where he spent many hours honing his skills and slowly designing his first collection. Now, even with a larger team of close to 20 people, he’s still committed to staying local and making sure that they keep manufacturing local. Additionally, he’s also been operating a retail space since 2003. I talked to him about how he got started and how he’s able to grow while staying committed to local manufacturing.

How did you get into woodworking?

I got into woodworking in 1999, 4 years after finishing a psychology degree at Queen’s University. I had always been interested in design and wanted to change direction and follow my passion. I had taken over a friend’s workshop and was producing custom cabinetry and furniture out of a small atelier in the St-Henri district of Montreal.

By 2003, I had put together a small collection of solid wood residential furniture. It was then that I decided to open the retail business in Montreal and pursue the craft on a more serious level.

How long has your design studio been in business and how has it changed over time?

Kastella has been in business since 2003. When I opened our retail location, we were 3 people. I was designing and building the furniture with the help of an apprentice. My mom worked in the store during the week and I covered the weekend shifts.

The business has changed on two significant fronts since we opened. The style of the furniture has evolved over the years. In the early days, the pieces had a more classic, shaker feel. Over time, the aesthetic has become more contemporary in concept and execution. The company has also grown since 2003. We’ve expanded our production facility and built a solid team of dedicated craftspeople.

How many people work with you at Kastella?

Our team is currently 19 strong. We have 2 people on the retail side of the business, 15 in our production facility, myself and my wife who handles business development and marketing. Half our team is dedicated to the production of our retail collection. The other half produces architectural millwork projects, something we’ve been doing since the beginning.

How did you come up with the name Kastella?

I wish there was a better backstory! I was traveling in South America in the late 90’s and the word castellano (meaning Spanish) kept coming up. The name Kastella is an evolved version but it wasn’t until I incorporated the company, that I realized it was actually a small fishing village in Greece. My roots are northern European, so no relationship there.

As a small business owner, what are some of the challenges that you face?

The biggest challenge is managing all aspects of the business. From day to day production to retail sales and client relations, time management is the number one issue. As the business has grown, I’ve been able to delegate some of the tasks. Finding time to design and be creative remains my focus.

You say your products are hand-crafted. What kinds of techniques are you employing in building each piece and are you using any modern technologies?

Our shop is equipped with standard machinery and we ultimately rely on the expertise of our individual team members to create high quality pieces. From the milling of the rough lumber to assembly and finishing, the bulk of our line is built by hand. Our T110 dining room table, for example, uses mortise and tenon joinery to ensure an exceptional level of durability.

While we don’t have any modern technology in our production facility, we do subcontract the production of a few key components to local CNC shops. The C401 stool top, as an example, is machined on a 5 axis CNC by a local company. The shape of the seat is so complex that it can only be done this way. We definitely take a traditional approach to furniture production. Each piece is produced from beginning to end by one furniture maker.

How has modern technology (if at all) helped your business – either for manufacturing and/or marketing?

The use of CNC subcontractors has definitely allowed us to push the limits of our designs. While very few pieces in the collection require it, CNC’s have given us the ability to produce certain parts more precisely and at a more reasonable cost.

While we do have a social media presence, our current market is local and as such, word of mouth has been our best source of marketing. As we look to other markets, technology will become increasingly important.

Your pieces are classic in materials and form – what inspires your designs?

I’ve always been a big fan of both Scandinavian and Japanese furniture design. I have an appreciation for well thought out, simple objects and this has definitely inspired my own creative process. I’ve always believed that timelessness in design is extremely important. Our company puts the emphasis on durability from both a physical and aesthetic perspective.

What is the most challenging piece of furniture you’ve ever made and why was it so?

Designing and building chairs would be the most challenging. The C205, which we’re showing at IDS, took over a year to prototype. Combining durability, aesthetics and comfort in a piece of furniture which gets a ton of use, pushes our technical limits.

What piece will you be bringing to IDS Toronto in January?

We’ll be bringing our T110f dining room table in walnut with a black Fenix top, our C205 chair in walnut, our T504 console in walnut, our S404 buffet in walnut and a few C401 stools in black stained white oak.

What’s unique/interesting/different about Canadian design? In other words, what makes Canadian design, Canadian?

There’s been a lot of discussion surrounding Canadian design over the past few years and what defines it. Canada has a long history of furniture production and the emphasis has and still is on solid wood. There’s clearly a northern European bent to much of the contemporary furniture being produced in Canada. Our identity, in my opinion, is still evolving but it’s clear that our tendency is towards simple, elegant and well made furniture.
