A Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo é uma igreja católica localizada na rua Primeiro de Março, no centro histórico da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Foi a Sede Episcopal da Diocese até 1976, quando foi concluída a nova Catedral Metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, razão pela qual também é referida como Antiga Sé.
A igreja localiza-se em frente à histórica Praça XV, ao lado dos edifícios coloniais do antigo Convento do Carmo e da Igreja da Ordem Terceira do Carmo.
Ao chegar ao Rio de Janeiro, ao final do século XVI, os carmelitas receberam como doação uma pequena capela dedicada a Nossa Senhora do Ó, na então Rua Direita. Ao lado desta capela foi construído o Convento do Carmo. A capelinha deu lugar à Igreja na segunda metade do século XVIII. Sua construção, realizada por Mestre Manuel Alves Setúbal, durou quinze anos. A sagração da nova Igreja ocorreu em 22 de julho de 1770. O talha do interior foi obra posterior de mestre Inácio Ferreira Pinto, iniciada 15 anos após a sagração.
Como a chegada da Família Real Portuguesa e sua Corte ao Rio de Janeiro, em 1808, o vizinho Paço dos Vice-Reis (atual Paço Imperial) foi próximo, D. João VI designou a Igreja do Carmo como nova Capela Real Portuguesa e, pouco mais tarde, também como Catedral do Rio de Janeiro, condição que manteve até 1977, quando foi inaugurada a nova Catedral Metropolitana, na avenida Chile.
Como Capela Real, a Igreja do Carmo foi palco de importantes eventos, como a sagração de D. João VI como Rei de Portugal, em 20 de março de 1816, após a morte de D. Maria I. Aqui também se casaram o príncipe D. Pedro, futuro Imperador do Brasil, com D. Leopoldina de Áustria, no dia 6 de novembro de 1817. Os imperadores D. Pedro I e D. Pedro II foram sagrados nesta Igreja.
A fachada foi completada apenas por volta de 1822 pelo arquiteto português Pedro Alexandre Cavroé, que deu ao edifício um frontão elevado em estilo clássico.
Após a Independência do Brasil, a Igreja do Carmo passou a ser a Capela Imperial e sediou as cerimônias de sagração dos imperadores D. Pedro I e D. Pedro II, bem como o casamento da Princesa Isabel com Gastão de Orléans, o Conde D’Eu, em 15 de outubro de 1864.
Para permitir a ligação da rua do Cano (atual rua Sete de Setembro) com o largo do Paço, em 1875 (1857 segundo outros autores) foram demolidas a torre e a portaria do antigo Convento. Um passadiço elevado conectou os dois edifícios até 1890.
Por determinação do Cardeal Arcoverde, a torre foi reconstruída em 1905 e, em 1910, construiu-se o frontispício voltado para a rua Sete de Setembro. Estas obras afastaram o conjunto das suas linhas originais.
Em 1976, quando a nova catedral para o Rio de Janeiro foi concluída, a Igreja do Carmo perdeu a sua condição de catedral, sendo a partir daí também chamada a Antiga Sé (Sé = Catedral).
A fachada principal da Igreja do Carmo é um tanto assimétrica devido ao posicionamento da torre, longe do corpo central. Por volta de 1900 a fachada e a torre foram muito alteradas; apenas o primeiro andar da fachada, com os três portais em estilo pombalino lisboeta, é ainda original. A estátua em um nicho da fachada representa o santo padroeiro da cidade, São Sebastião. A torre, reconstruída entre 1905 e 1913 pelo arquiteto italiano Rafael Rebecchi, é encimada por uma estátua, em bronze, de Nossa Senhora da Conceição.
No interior, as paredes da nave única possuem uma série de capelas laterais profundas separadas por pilastras. Sobre cada capela há um balcão (tribuna) que se alterna com pilastras contendo telas ovais com pinturas dos Apóstolos, de autoria do pintor colonial José Leandro de Carvalho. O teto, de madeira curvada, é subdividido em tramos que acompanham as divisões da nave. Sobre cada balcão há uma abertura no teto (luneta) que permite a entrada de luz. No fundo da nave encontra-se a capela-mor, separada desta por um arco-cruzeiro.
A decoração do interior é a principal atração artística do edifício, graças ao magnífico trabalho de talha dourada de feição rococó que cobre a capela-mor, arco-cruzeiro, capelas laterais, nave e teto. A talha, de grande unidade de estilo, foi executada a partir de 1785 pelo escultor Inácio Ferreira Pinto, um dos maiores artistas do Rio de Janeiro colonial. A estética rococó da talha é evidenciada pelo tipo e distribuição dos ornatos, repartidos em painéis com molduras douradas, que não chegam a cobrir toda a superfície, permitindo o contraste entre o dourado e os fundos brancos e transmitindo uma sensação de elegância. O arco triunfal da capela-mor é particularmente espetacular. Felizmente as reformas posteriores alteraram relativamente pouco o interior da igreja.
Curiosidades
Uma lápide, no corredor lateral que dá acesso à sacristia, assinala que ali se encontram depositados, desde 1903, em uma urna de chumbo, parte dos restos mortais de Pedro Álvares Cabral, descobridor do Brasil, que jazem na Igreja de Santa Maria da Graça em Santarém, Portugal.
Em dois dos sete sinos no campanário, encontra-se gravada a data de fabricação: 1623.
Um desses sete sinos foi fundido por João Batista Jardineiro em 1822, ostentando as armas da Família Real Portuguesa e a inscrição: D. João VI.
A Igreja do Carmo teve muita importância no desenvolvimento da música erudita no Rio de Janeiro, tendo sido regentes e compositores da Capela Real, o brasileiro Padre José Maurício Nunes Garcia e o português Marcos Portugal.

The church is located opposite the historic Praça XV , alongside colonial buildings of the old Carmo Convent and Church of the Third Order of Carmo .
Upon arriving at Rio de Janeiro at the end of the sixteenth century , the Carmelites received as a donation a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of O , then on Straight Street . Beside this chapel was built the Convento do Carmo . The chapel gave way to the Church in the second half of the eighteenth century. Its construction , performed by Master Manuel Alves Setúbal , lasted fifteen years. The consecration of the new church took place on July 22, 1770 . The woodwork of the interior was later masterpiece Ignatius Ferreira Pinto , started 15 years after the consecration .
As the arrival of the Portuguese royal family and his court to Rio de Janeiro in 1808 , the Palace of the Viceroys neighbor ( current Imperial Palace ) was next , D. John VI appointed Carmo Church as new Portuguese Royal Chapel and , somewhat later , also as Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro , a condition that remained until 1977 , when it opened the new Metropolitan Cathedral in Chile Avenue .
As Royal Chapel , Carmo Church was the scene of important events, such as the consecration of D. King João VI of Portugal , on March 20, 1816 , after the death of D. Maria I. Here also married Prince D. Peter , the future Emperor of Brazil , with D. Leopoldina of Austria , on November 6, 1817 . The emperors D. Pedro I and D. Pedro II were sacred in this Church .
The facade was completed only in 1822 by Portuguese architect Pedro Alexandre Cavroé , which gave the building a high pediment in classic style.
After the Independence of Brazil , Carmo Church became the Imperial Chapel and hosted the coronation ceremonies of the emperors D. Pedro I and D. Peter II and Princess Elizabeth ‘s marriage to Gaston d’ Orléans , Count of Eu , on October 15, 1864 .
To allow connection Cano Street (now Sete de Setembro street ) with the width of the palace in 1875 ( 1857 seconds other authors ) the tower and gatehouse of the old convent were demolished . An elevated walkway connected the two buildings until 1890 .
For determination of Cardinal Arcoverde , the tower was rebuilt in 1905 and in 1910 was built the façade facing the street Sete de Setembro . These works away all their original lines .
In 1976 , when the new cathedral to Rio de Janeiro was completed, the Carmo Church lost its status as the cathedral , and from there also called the Old Cathedral (Sé Cathedral = ) .
The main facade of the Igreja do Carmo is somewhat asymmetric due to the positioning of the tower , away from the central body. By 1900 the façade and tower were much changed , only the first floor of the façade with three portals Pombal in Lisbon style is still original . A statue in a niche of the facade represents the city’s patron saint , San Sebastian . The tower was rebuilt between 1905 and 1913 by the architect Rafael Rebecchi , is surmounted by a statue in bronze of Our Lady.
Inside, the walls of the nave have a number of side chapels separated by pilasters deep . About each chapel there is a counter ( podium ) that alternates with pilasters containing oval canvases with paintings of the Apostles , written by the colonial painter José Leandro de Carvalho . The ceiling , curved wood, is divided into sections, which follow the divisions of nature . On each branch there is an opening in the ceiling ( bezel ) that lets in light. At the bottom of the ship is the chancel , separated from it by a rainbow cruise.
The interior decoration is the main attraction of Art building , thanks to the wonderful work of gilt rococo feature covering the chancel arch – cruise, side chapels , nave and ceiling . The carvings of great unity of style , was run from 1785 by sculptor Ignatius Ferreira Pinto , one of the greatest artists of colonial Rio de Janeiro . The Rococo aesthetic hoist is evidenced by the type and distribution of ornaments , divided into panels with gilt frames , which do not cover the entire surface , allowing the contrast between the gold and white backgrounds and conveying a sense of elegance . The triumphal arch of the chancel is particularly spectacular. Fortunately subsequent reforms changed relatively little the church interior.
Curiosities
A tombstone in the side corridor that gives access to the sacristy , notes that there are deposited , since 1903 , in a lead urn , part of the remains of Pedro Alvares Cabral , discoverer of Brazil , which lie in the Church of Santa Maria da Graça Santarem , Portugal .
In two of the seven bells in the steeple, lies the recorded date of manufacture : 1623.
One of those seven bells was cast by John Gardener in 1822 , bearing the arms of the Royal Family and the inscription : D. John VI .
The Carmo Church played an important role in the development of classical music in Rio de Janeiro , having conductors and composers of the Chapel Royal , the Brazilian Father José Maurício Nunes Garcia Marcos Portugal and Portuguese .
