A wooden salt bowl. The lid is fixed to the bottom and slides over with perfect precision snugly closing the salt inside. On the left a wooden spoon for the salt. Realy nice wood-work.

Turned from ash and purpleheart. 5-1/2" Dia. x 3-7/8" High (14 cm x 9.7 cm). The center section is built from staves tapered and beveled like barrel staves. I’ve been putting off doing this type of construction for some time but finally made a jig up to do it safely and accurately. After finish sanding I rubbed some black paint over the ash, which is open grained, and then wiped it off the surface leaving the grain black. Snooker cues are generally made of ash and given that treatment so I thought I’d give it a shot myself.

George was the third generation of bowl turner, specialising in the production of bowls and plates from elm wood using a pole lathe in a small hut without electricity. His workshop was located in Miles Green off Bucklebury Common, Berkshire. George is remembered for saying "Money’s only storing up trouble, I think. I like making bowls better than I like making money."

A handcrafted bowl created by a friend and colleague of mine. A true work of art.
