Gutenfels Castle located on a hill overlooking Kaub was built around 1200 and besieged unsuccessfully for 39days in 1504. In the 19th century woodwork and masonry were auctioned off and later the castle was sold and saved from destruction by renovation from 1889 till 1892. Gutenfels Castle now houses a hotel with a great view over the rhine valley and represents an example of Hohenstaufen military and residential architecture.
