I’ve now written two articles explaining to you the different types of wood, which are currently used in carpentry and the Latin names for the trees it comes from and a bit of general information on the species of the trees. As there is so much to learn about every single type of wood and as you can appreciate there are lots of different woods I’ve really only touched the surface in my previous articles; ‘Different Wood Types and Their Uses’ and ‘Different Wood Types and Their Uses part 2’. I am now going to try and tell you about just a few more types which I think you should consider for further carpentry projects such as making skirting boards or furniture for your home. I hope you find this article as informative as the previous two.
I don’t know about you but I hadn’t really heard of Sapele wood until recently as it isn’t a popular wood used in everyday making of skirting boards and furniture. The Latin name for the Sapele tree is Entandrophragma cylindricum, the Sapele is a large tree native to Africa and Nigeria in particular. The Africans often refer to it as the sapelli or aboudikro tree. This is an uncommon wood because of the protections and restrictions put in place to stop these trees being cut down too quickly. This type of wood has a similar appearance to Mahogany if used in furniture or a material to make a piece of skirting board. As it’s got such a high density it is often used as flooring or as material for musical instruments. This wood is most famously known for being used as the interior trim in vehicles made by Cadillac, which is an American car maker.
Maple wood comes from the Maple or Acer tree, which is part of the Aceraceae tree family. There are just short of a 130 species of this tree and it originates from Asia but they have also been known to come from Europe, Northern Africa and Northern America. We most commonly know the Maple being used for syrup which is taken from the wood and it’s also most commonly known to be used for it’s wood to add a smoked flavor to food. In addition to this the timber is also used from the bigger trees in the family, as it’s so sturdy and hard. Baseball bats are made from maple wood so you can appreciate how hard the wood is. If used for home improvement such as skirting board or furniture you won’t have a doubt it will last a life, time and with a lovely warm light brown color it can be very appealing to the eye.
I home my three articles have allowed you more insight into just a few different types of wood.
