Singapore Lifestyle is extremely rich and vibrant!

Interestingly, Singapore is in fact one of the most enjoyable cities in Southeast Asia and arguably in the World. Famous for having a clean and green environment, the country is rumored to be “blandly efficient and safe, a boringly tasteless, disciplinarian and unadventurous place where citizens are robbed of their cherished freedom to spit on the street and chew gum” – this is utter nonsense!

Singapore, is an island city-state and the smallest country in Southeast Asia. It is rather small being a small city-state having an area of 699 km2 being the reason for its dense population. Geographically, Singapore is located on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, south of the Malaysia state of Johor, and north of the Indonesia Riau Islands. It lies just 137 kilometres (miles) north of the Equator.

The climate in Singapore is hot and humid as it is located in the tropics. The temperature ranges from 34C in the day to 22C at night. The rainy season is from November to January while there may be some rain the whole year through. The skyscrapers occupy 50% of the land of Singapore; however, there are still many parks, zoos, botanic gardens and waterfalls for you to visit on your trip to Singapore. Most of this is artificial where even beach sand is imported to make Singapore a tourist destination for millions of tourists every year.

Singapore has four official languages – Mandarin, English, Tamil and Malay. Accordingly, the population is a mix of Chinese, Indians, Malays and a minority of other nationals. Despite being a small city, Singapore is presently an industrial country having one of the busiest ports of the world.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Few cities can boast Singapore’s fascinating ethnic brew. Where else in the world can you dip into the cultures of China, Indian and Muslim Malaysia all in one day, against a backdrop of ultra-modern Western commerce? Not only has Singapore’s history of migration left a rich cultural and architectural legacy that makes wandering the streets an absorbing delight, it has created one of the world’s greatest eating capitals. You don’t have to look far to find echoes of the island’s colourful, rakish past, or evidence of a thriving and creatively unfettered artistic community. Singapore’s soul is alive and well – and it is “Wonderfully Singapore”.

There are 58 smaller islands surrounding Singapore of which the most famous is Sentosa. This island is an attraction of Singapore and has museums, beaches, aquariums, camping sites and sports centers for tourists. There are lots of hostels and hotels that cater to your stay in Sentosa too.

Moreover, Singapore is not all about tourist attractions, shopping and food. Nor is the notion of Singapore as completely urbanised anything more than popular myth. Adventure activities include diving with sharks at Underwater World on Sentosa, mountain biking around Bukit Timah, leopard-spotting at the Singapore Zoo’s magical Night Safari, waterskiing or wake-boarding on the Kallang River, Go-Karting and Rock Climbing. And if you want to retreat from civilisation completely, the centre of the island retains large tracts of forest where the only sound you can hear is the monkeys swinging through the trees. In fact, Singapore is one of only two cities in the world that still retains a patch of primary rainforest, in the form of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.

FOOD

Food is the national obsession in Singapore – and it’s not difficult to see why. Sitting out under the stars at a bustling hawker centre with a few bottles of Tiger Beer and diving into an enormous array of Asian dishes is one of the iconic Singaporean experiences. Sambal Stingray, Char Kway Teow, Oyster Omelette, Chicken Rice, Clay-Pot Seafood, Fish Head Curry, Beef Rendang … the list is as long as it is delicious!

And, of course, if your credit card hasn’t already taken a battering in the shops, the city’s Restaurants are some of the most stylish and innovative.

SHOPPING

Shopping is what brought Singapore its fame. Everything can be bought here from electronic goods to clothes to herbal medicine. Orchard road is the hub of activity of Singapore and is the best place for shopping addicts. You find the latest in the fashion world and are sure to enjoy yourself even just window shopping here. This is also the dining center of Singapore where you can find international cuisine to tingle your taste buds.

If there’s one thing more stylish than the Bars and Restaurants, it’s the boutiques that have made Singapore the byword in Asia for extravagant Shopping. Away from the Gucci and Louis Vuitton onslaught of Orchard Road, however, there are bargains to be found on everything from clothes to electronics – and a range of art and antique shops that few Asian cities can match.

How to Manage Ethics in the Workplace

The effective management of ethics is sound business practice. Employees’ morale is raised; bottom-line performance is improved, your corporate image is enhanced; and customers choose to form business relationships with companies that adhere to high standards of ethical conduct. One of your key management tasks is to persuade employees to accept your organization’s ethical values. Here are some points to consider…

1. Understand the benefits of ethical conduct.

All key parties benefit from ethical conduct within the organization. Employees who have confidence in their management contribute to their organization’s prosperity. Conversely, in an unethical climate, employee productivity declines, creativity is channeled into seeking ways to profit personally from the business, loyalty diminishes, and absenteeism and staff turnover increase. Customers prefer to be associated with and remain loyal to companies that adhere to codes of ethical behavior. Shareholders derive up to fifteen times greater return from companies with a dedicated commitment to ethical conduct. US research in the 1990s identified companies across industry sectors that had outperformed their peers. The one common quality among those companies was a demonstrated commitment to their stated values.

2. Focus on ethical conduct.

When referring to codes of behavior, the term ‘ethical conduct’ is more comprehensive and more meaningful than ‘ethics’. The best ethical values and intentions are relatively meaningless unless they generate fair, just, and observable behaviors in the workplace. Ethical conduct focuses on demonstrated behavior-doing, not just saying.

3. Develop a code of ethical conduct.

The best way to handle ethical dilemmas is to avoid their occurrence in the first place. The process involved in developing a code of ethical conduct helps to sensitize employees to ethical considerations and minimizes the likelihood that unethical behavior will occur. A process is outlined in How to develop a code of ethical conduct on page 18 of the e-Book Ethics.

4. Promote process.

When it comes to managing ethics and, in particular, developing a code of ethical conduct, the journey is just as important as the destination. Codes, policies, procedures, and budgets are important. So, too, is the process of reflection and dialogue that produces those deliverables. Where possible use group decision making to actively involve participation in, and ownership of, the final outcome.

5. Link ethics to other management practices.

The development of a code of ethical conduct should not occur in isolation. The creation of a values statement, for example, should occur as part of a strategic planning process. A link to ethical conduct fits ideally with this process. Similarly, any discussion about personnel policies could also reflect ethical values as they apply to the organization’s culture.

6. Demonstrate ethical practices.

The best way for you and your organization to gain a reputation for operating ethically is to demonstrate that behavior-the most important way to remain ethical is to be ethical. And the best advertisement your ethics management program can have is everyone’s commitment to it. Be prepared for an increase in the number of ethical issues to be dealt with. As staff become increasingly aware of the importance of ethics management, it is to be expected that more issues will be identified. As Helen Vines says in ‘The Core of Good Business’ (HR Monthly, June 1999): ‘The most damaging thing is for management to come out with a code of ethics, or a value statement, and model a different type of behavior.’

7. Allocate roles and responsibilities.

The approach will vary according to the organization, but an appropriate structure could include the following:

• An ethics management committee, representing the entire organization, with responsibilities to include implementing and administering an ethics management program. The creation and monitoring of a code of ethical conduct would be part of that overall program.

• An ethics officer who ideally should be a senior executive but not from HR or the Legal Department. He or she must be trained in matters of ethics in the workplace and have ultimate responsibility for managing the program.

• Demonstrated involvement and support of top management. Staff and Board must see that senior management takes ethical conduct seriously.

8. Identify and model industry benchmarks.

An increasing number of companies strive to match practices with espoused values. The Soul of a Business (Bantam, 1993), for example, is an account of the way in which ethical considerations guided the day-to-day operations of the American company, Tom’s of Maine. One of the company’s stated values was its commitment to the health of the environment. The company, therefore, used glass containers instead of plastic, even though plastic was cheaper to purchase, label, and ship. Tom’s of Maine was also committed to supporting its regional economy. Only when it couldn’t purchase a resource in its local area would Tom’s go farther afield. This demonstrated commitment to espoused values contributed to the company’s growth and profitability and inspired others to follow its lead.

How to Create a Resume Heading

The heading portion of your resume is arguably the most important part of your resume. This section gives the employer your name and provides them with multiple ways of contacting you.

It is important to have this information at the top of your resume and emphasized so it’s impossible to miss.

Your Name

Don’t get too fancy here. First and last name will suffice. Unless your name is extremely common (as in John Smith common), there is no need for a middle initial in the name section.

Contact Information

In the heading section of your resume, you will want to provide the two best ways to reach you for purposes of a follow-up or to offer employment. Most people provide both a phone number and an e-mail address.

With your phone number, remember to provide an area code as well. Also, make sure the phone number you provide is able to be answered at all times. I’ve seen candidates skipped over for positions if their phone went to voicemail.

When it comes to the e-mail address on your resume, I find it best to create an e-mail specifically for your job search. You can use many of the free e-mail services, but pick a tasteful name. Something using the combination of your initials and first and last name is easy to use.

Using a separate e-mail address can also make it more difficult to find you on social media, which may be an added benefit depending on your profiles.

Location, Location, Location

The heading of your resume will also include your location. I still often see people list out their entire address on their resume, which I feel is unnecessary. For the purposes of a resume I feel it is best to list the city and state you are in.

The reason any employer would want to know your location is as an indicator of whether or not you will show up to work everyday. Listing the city and state fits this need for the employer. You will have an opportunity to list your personal address later on if you move on in the application process.

Your heading section will be the first impression the employer will get from you. Make sure that your name and contact information stand out so they will have the two most important pieces of information on your resume: who you are and how to get in contact with you!

Italian Cuisine – Cooking in Italy

Italian cuisine has a huge variety of dishes and drinks: because Italy was not officially unified until 1861, and its cuisines reflect the cultural variety of its regions and its diverse history (with influences from Greek, Roman, Gaelic, Germanic, Goth, Norman, Lombard, Frank, Turkish, Hebrew, Slavic, Arabic and Chinese cuisines). Italian cuisine is savored in every corner of the world.

In a way, there is really no such thing as Italian cuisine in the way that people usually understand national cuisines. Each region has its own specialties. Italian cuisine is not only highly regionalized, it is also very seasonal. The high priority placed on the use of fresh, seasonal produce distinguishes the Italian cuisine from imitations available in most other countries.

Regional differences

Roman cuisine, for instance, uses a lot of pecorino (cheese made from sheep’s milk) and offal, while Tuscan cuisine includes white beans, meat, and bread. Pizza making also varies throughout the country, the pizza crusts in Rome are thin and crispy, while Neapolitan pizza and Sicilian pizza have a thicker crust. The influence of Northern Italian cuisine can be seen in French and German cuisines. Piedmont and Lombardy each grow their own different kinds of rice, which are used to make risotto. The North of Italy is the home of polenta. Emilia-Romagna is known for lasagna and tortellini (stuffed pasta), Naples (Napoli) is the home of pizza, mozzarella cheese and pastries. Calabria’s cuisine uses a lot of hot pepper in its renowned salami (which is common, in several varieties, throughout the country) and uses capsicum. Sicily is the home of ice cream but its cuisine also has many influences from Arab cuisine (lemon, pistachio) and also includes fish (tuna, swordfish). Sardinia is famous for lamb and pecorino.

Northern and Southern Italian cooking

Traditional Italian cuisine varies from region to region and does not follow North-South tendencies. Northern and southern Italian cuisines can be differentiated, primarily, by the north using more butters and creams and the south more tomato and olive oil. Generally, however, there is a strong difference between the regional use of cooking fat and traditional style of pasta. Inland northern and northeastern regions usually prefer more butter, cream, polenta, mascarpone, grana padano, and parmigian cheeses, risotto, lasagna and fresh egg pasta. Coastal northern and central regions are more of a link between north and south and often use tortellini, ravioli and are known for great prosciutto. The southern regions are known for mozzarella, caciocavallo, and pecorino cheeses, olive oil, and dried pasta. Southern Italian cuisine also uses the ubiquitous tomato.

Types of Italian coffee

Italian coffee (caffè), also known as espresso, which is a strong coffee prepared by forcing the hot water through finely ground coffee beans at high pressure. It is usually served in relatively small amount. Caffè macchiato is covered with a bit of steamed milk or whip cream; caffè ristretto is made with less water, and is stronger. Cappuccino is mixed or topped with steamed, mostly foamy, milk. It is generally considered a morning drink. Caffelatte is usually equal parts of espresso and steamed milk, like café au lait, and is typically served in a large cup. Latte macchiato (spotted milk) is a glass of warm milk with a bit of coffee.

Italian wines

We cannot talk about Italian food without talking about Italian wine. Most Italian wines of great names are produced in the three main Italian regions: Piedmont (Barolo), Venetia (Amarone, Pinot Grigio, etc.) and Tuscany (Chianti, Brunello). Other great wine producing regions such as Puglie (Primitivo) and Sicily also produce some noteworthy wines.

Traditional Menu

A traditional Italian meal:

1. Antipasto – hot or cold appetizers

2. Primo (“first course”), usually consists of a hot dish like pasta, risotto, gnocchi, polenta or soup. There are usually many vegetarian options.

3. Secondo (“second course”), the main dish, usually fish or meat (pasta is never the main course of a meal). Traditionally veal is the most widely used meat, at least in the North, although beef has become more popular since World War II.

4. Contorno (“side dish”) may consist of a salad or vegetables. A traditional menu features salad after the main course.

5. Dolce (“dessert”)

6. Caffè (“coffee”) (espresso)

7. Digestive which consists of liquors/liqueurs (grappa, amaro, limoncello) sometimes called ammazzacaffè (“Coffee killer”)

Although it is said that today the traditional Italian menu is reserved for special events even as the common menu only includes the first and second course, the side dish (often joined to the second course) and coffee (if not in a hurry). One remarkable aspect of an Italian meal, especially if eaten in an Italian home, is that the primo, or first course, is usually the more substantial dish, containing most of the meal’s carbohydrates, and will consist of risotto or pasta. Modern Italian cuisine also includes single courses (all-at-once courses), providing carbs and proteins altogether (e.g. pasta and vegetables).

What to Expect at a Japanese Steakhouse

There are few dining experiences that are better than a true Japanese steakhouse. With a host of diverse entrees, appetizers, and drinks-plus an atmosphere as rich as the menu-an authentic Japanese steakhouse will leave you with a full belly, yet hungry for more.

As with any good steakhouse, pacing and sampling are key. You don’t want to overload yourself with appetizers and drinks. However, you will definitely want to try a few of each. Most good eateries will offer a wide selection of starters, including various sushi rolls, miso soup, and crunchy house salads. Choose one or two that you’ve never had before. Even if they’re not your favorite, the portions are usually fairly small, so no food is wasted. Be sure to get an authentic Japanese drink as well. Most restaurants serve a good selection of house specials, as well as sake, Japanese beer, plum wine, and non-alcoholic tea.

When it comes to your entree, get a different type of meat than whatever you had for your appetizer. If you didn’t have an appetizer, get a platter for your entree that you can sample and share with the rest of your table. Most Japanese steakhouses offer chicken, shrimp, lobster, and sirloin entrees, as well as sushi samplers and grilled vegetable options for the vegetarians in your party. Platters and combinations like “Land and Sea” or Kobe/Wagyu plates are a great way to get all of the meats in one meal. In you are dining in a group, another strategy is to specialize and share. That way everyone at your table gets to try a little bit of everything.

If you still have room for desert, complete the dining experience with Mochi ice cream or Daifuku (rice cake filled with a deliciously sweet filling). If not, take your time grabbing the check. Authentic Japanese restaurants often have some of the most distinct and immersive atmospheres out there. Sometimes the mood is mellow: traditional decor, trickling water, and subdued lighting make for a relaxing and serene dining experience. Other times, the Japanese steakhouse becomes a stage for showmanship: fires blaze, cleavers chop, and the food is often prepared directly in front of you. Be prepared-some locations may literally throw food your way.

Overall, when dining at a Japanese steakhouse, it’s important to go in with an empty stomach and an open mind. It helps if you’re into meat, too. The expansive menus, traditional options, large portions, and immersive atmospheres will have something for everyone. Go ahead grab an extra napkin or two, and leave a nice tip on your way out.

Questionnaire Context, Order, and Meaning

When designing questionnaires, the order of items on the questionnaire creates a context, or meaning, for the entire questionnaire. Items placed early on in the questionnaire effect the way in which people respond to later questions.

“Each item will be interpreted by respondents within the context of the questionnaire, previous questions and the wording of each item,” notes Gregory G. Holyk, University of Illinois at Chicago, in the Encyclopedia of Survey Research Methods.

To ensure positive use of context in questionnaires, it is important that you clearly define the purpose of the questionnaire. Start writing drafts of items to be included on the questionnaire – items that directly relate to the purpose of the questionnaire. The next step is to put items into a meaningful format (e.g. open-ended, multiple choice, etc.) and order. The order in which items appear can bias people’s thinking and, thus, their responses to your questions.

After introducing the survey’s general purpose and content, the first question should be easy and nonthreatening; it sets the tone. Difficult or sensitive questions are best asked later, once rapport is established.

Items should flow in a logical order, with similar content grouped together. Providing brief directions or a transition statement between sections of the questionnaire helps prepare respondents for a change of pace and lets them know that a different mindset is necessary. It also helps retain interest and attention.

In what order should general/specific questions asked? Some researchers contend that if specific questions are asked first, the attention given to them will influence the responses to general questions. Starting with more specific questions about various aspects of the issues can give respondents some background on which to base their replies to subsequent, general question(s).

Research suggests that context effects are most noticeable in attitudinal surveys. A between-question context effect occurs when the questionnaire contains items about a particular subject, like health care, and then suddenly changes to a totally different subject, like the outcome of a presidential election. A within-question context effect occurs when words frame an issue from an unusual perspective. Example: Holyk proposes that the use of anti-abortion instead of pro-choice affects attitudes toward abortion. The way in which questionnaire items are worded affects responses and ultimately survey findings.

Response alternatives are the ‘multiple choice answers’ from which respondents make their selection. In crafting the questionnaire, you must decide whether or not it’s important that respondents search their memory and recall a response or simply be able to recognize a response from a list. If you provide a list of these choices, or response alternatives, know that you are making assumptions about the range of opinions or behaviors held by the population being researched or introducing your own bias.

The technique of using skip directions (i.e., if yes, go to question 6; if no, go to question 7) can become confusing and time consuming, so should be used sparingly, but when necessary. Enough white space must be left to record answers to open-ended questions, usually about three lines worth of space. The page must not be cluttered, since clutter can lead to errors in responding.

Having taken context effects into account in designing the questionnaire, the questionnaire must be pre-tested. Item wording, format, and order must be revised, as necessary before pre-testing the questionnaire again. A successful questionnaire is one that flows smoothly without leading questions or bias.

Plan A Coffee Klatch For Fellowship and Fun!

Recently a friend of mine threw an impromptu coffee klatch that was the best time I have had in a very long time! A coffee klatch is simply a casual social gathering for coffee and conversation. It has been a reason for friends and family to get together for years, while drinking delicious coffee and have great conversations! I am planning on throwing a coffee klatch next month and have thought a few fun ideas.

First, I am planning on having a variety of coffees to choose from – of course! I am going to utilize my espresso maker, my Keurig one cup coffee pot, and my favorite coffee vessel – the French press. I plan to have different regions of coffee as well as different roasting levels. My idea of the perfect party will include some light, medium and dark roasted coffees so everyone can have something they find delicious to the palate. I also plan to have very expensive roasts, such as Kona and Jamaican Blue Mountain, in limited quantities for all the guests to sample.

To be served with all that delicious java, I’m planning quite a menu. I have decided to make a blueberry crumble cake, a variety of muffins, a couple different quiche, fruits, cheeses and an assortment of brunch type fare. I’m also going to serve candied bacon and other savory items for depth to the palate. This should be the perfect companion to the different roasts of rich coffee and serve to fill the belly with something other than just caffeine!

Another key factor to a great coffee klatch is making sure everyone has something to talk about! Some great ideas would be to set out a variety of hot topic books and magazines. Many people also enjoy to play a variety of games so I intend to have a couple chess and check boards out for those who wish to jump into a game with friends. Also, having a variety of music makes for a great time.

The key to a great party is making sure everyone has something to do, to eat and of course to drink! In addition to the coffee, I also plan to have pitchers of iced tea and lemon water. Sometimes when sampling different foods and fare, it is a good idea to serve other beverages in addition to the coffee. That way everyone has something to sip and nibble while enjoying good company, conversation and games!

How good is your grammar? When writing email messages, proper grammar is important. By being aware of common mistakes, you can avoid them.

In other words, you don’t need to know all the rules. (What a relief!) But,… (You knew that was coming, didn’t you?) you need to know what you don’t know. If you are unsure if something is correct, look it up. Or, ask someone knowledgeable for assistance.

If you don’t have the time to seek help, here’s a quick tip. Use different wording. To put it another way:

If you can’t determine how to make the sentence correct, re-word the sentence so it doesn’t contain the item you’re having trouble with. Please don’t tell your high school English teacher that I made this suggestion!

Yes, it would be great if the entire country knew proper English. However, the reality is many people don’t. The goal of this article is to convince you to select the grammar that you know is correct.

The antecedent is plural which requires a plural pronoun.

In other words, the plural form of “customers” requires using a plural pronoun “their.”

6. Incorrect.

The antecedent is singular which requires a singular pronoun.

In other words, the singular form of “customer” requires using a singular pronoun “his or her.”

This can also be written “his/her.”

7. Incorrect.

The correct word is “fewer.”

Fewer is used when you can count the quantity (e.g., “fewer students,” or “fewer hours in the workday,” or “fewer corn kernels”).

Less is used with an indeterminate quantity (e.g., “less interest,” or “less time,” or “less corn”).

8. Correct.

Fred can count the number of his employees, so “fewer” is correct.

Score:

8 = You’re perfect. (But, you knew that already.) Keep emailing!

Persuasive copy is the most vital element on your website. Persuasive copy can move your prospect to act, such as opt-in or buy. Yet too few websites contain persuasive copy.

If you do not have persuasive copy on your landing page or opt-in form, why should a visitor opt-in?

But if you do not get your visitor to opt-in, you have no way to recover the cost of getting them there. And you cannot convert this into sales.

The good news is there are easy ways to fix these website traffic building mistakes.

The first way is by attracting website traffic that focuses on your target audience. The more you know about your audience, the better the results. This includes demographics, psychographics and buying behavior. They key here is to exclude those who do NOT fit your target.

Direct mail lists, publicity, co-registration and affiliate marketing can enable you to focus on attracting your target audience. SEO and pay-per-click can too, but these strategies have a much higher risk of attracting too many folks that do not fit your target audience.

A second way is to create a landing page that promotes a lead magnet, such as a quiz or FREE report, plus an opt-in page. Your only goal here is to maximize opt-ins. That way you can develop a relationship with your visitor after he or she leaves your website.

QR Codes: What’s the Marketing Buzz About?

In the hot space between the tech and marketing worlds there has been some considerable buzz of late about the efficacy of QR codes. QR — short for Quick Response — codes are black patterns in a square shape on a white background. These are the codes used by many airlines to check-in for flights using your smart phone.

The information encoded can be a text, a URL or almost any other form of data. When these bar codes are posted in public or private spaces they can be scanned by smart phones so users can get fast, direct access to websites or other online data resources to promote businesses, offer deals, deliver information or just plain advertise. The advantage is the speed and efficiency that smart phone scanning can offers users who may not have time to remember or write down a website address or surf the web to get to the site that features the information that is being promoted. Huge in Japan (where they were conceived in the 90s to as a manufacturing tracking device) and quickly catching on in Europe, QR codes are just making their way to America. It’s hard to tell whether this will be Beatlemania Stateside or if this is just another techie trend that won’t play in the Peorias between cities like New York and San Francisco.

Not surprisingly, some of the “hippest” industries in the country — fashion and rock music — have been some of the first to take the QR code buzz to maximum levels of exposure.

The Music and technology festival South By Southwest, held annually in Austin, TX, is known for introducing the latest technology to the mainstream (like it did for Twitter in ’07 and FourSquare in ’09) made a headliner out of QR codes. There were QR codes all over the festival, including on the official festival badges. According to Evolver, “QR Codes will be even more ‘everywhere’ at SXSW 2011 than they were last year, with good reason. As the smartphone-toting throngs stream past posters for bands and tech startups, plenty of potential exists to coax them into linking to websites, apps, videos and free stuff using the codes, which have grown significantly more popular since the crowds last surged through the streets of Austin.”

Obviously there are some great advantages to the technology. It’s fast and it’s made for people “on the go.” It integrates web technology and the virtual world with real, physical space. It’s eye-catching and it’s great for businesses who want to attract new customers or markets that wouldn’t otherwise find them.

What QR Codes Can Do For You

Bookmark a website, Make a Phone Call, Send an SMS, Send an E-Mail, Create a vCard, Create a vCalendar Event, Google Maps, iTunes App URL, Foursquare Venue URL, Play a video, send a tweet, and many other forms of data delivery. You are only limited by your imagination.

From erecting a whole new paradigm of marketing and advertising to being an over-hyped false alarm in a tech era that’s already peaked, those Americans who even know what QR codes aren’t all in agreement about how valid a marketing tool this kind of technology can become in the States. Defenders say it’s an absolute necessity for America to keep up with her Eastern and European counterparts on the technological scene; if we aren’t going to lead, we best stay in the game as followers, as peers. And then others point to the fact that America is an overwhelmingly automotive commuting country and that QR codes perform best in places with heavy foot traffic like Tokyo, Paris, London… and New York and San Francisco, two of the most atypical American cities in the country in almost every category.

Others still say the smart money is on context. No, there’s no purpose of posting a QR code on a billboard alongside a highway in a Midwestern suburb. But what about that Midwestern mall? Small businesses without major brand recognition can bring in new customers by being the first to add this exciting new technology in a small town or suburb that doesn’t see a lot of edgy, cutting-edge ideas in action. And by attracting the youth market, which is most likely to be turned on by QR codes in areas where they may not otherwise get a lot of lip service, mall-type stores selling sneakers, cellular phones and concert tickets can get a lot of business with this group, one of the advertising and marketing world’s most coveted — and, sometimes, fickle — demographics. With time and reputation-building, one can expect older users and less edgy businesses to follow suit, using QR codes to offer deals on every and any thing from the banal to the novel, from auto services, grocery coupons and public service information to movie trailers, music downloads and recreational events. They may even replace basic business cards.

Not to mention the fact that from a business owner’s perspective, QR codes are relatively simple, free and painless to create. There are numerous “creation tools” that can create the analytics of your QR codes like MyOR.co and QReateBuzz. Some of these will even offer tracking devices to see how many people are scanning your business’s codes, how often, in what location and with what devices. You can also brand them with style and color. Phone apps like QR Droid and QR Code Scanner Pro for Blackberry are already in the game for some smartphone owners with these features.

Of course, like any other marketing tool, the hard part isn’t finding a place to park your ad but knowing to whom it speaks. Without getting bogged down in the technological aspect of QR codes, it’s important to remember that this is just another marketing device and that knowing your brand, how to speak to your customer in terms of voice and place and what they’re looking for still apply as they would if you were erecting just another billboard on the side of the road. Will QR codes bring new customers? Probably. But will they change the demographic that your business already speaks to? Well, that depends on you and your business. What the window of newness offers right now, unlike any other quality when it comes to broadening a customer base, is that the glean and shine of the new is only effective when it’s new. So if that uniqueness and cutting-edge buzz of the QR code is something you think could attract customers who may not otherwise be interested in or exposed to your product but like the edgy cache that QR codes offer right now, it’s best to strike while the iron is hot.
